Acute & critical care
Emergency Medicine
Emergency departments in the Gulf see a wide range of patients, from road traffic trauma to heat stroke and acute coronary syndromes. This page explains how emergency physicians are licensed in the region and which exams matter.

Emergency medicine in practice
Emergency physicians are responsible for the first hours of acute care. They triage, resuscitate, stabilise and decide on the next step for every patient who comes through the door, regardless of age or presenting problem. The specialty demands fast decisions, procedural skills and the ability to lead a team under pressure.
Presentations in Gulf emergency departments have their own character:
- Trauma: road traffic collisions and occupational injuries, particularly on construction sites
- Environmental emergencies: heat exhaustion and heat stroke during the summer months, dehydration, and marine envenomation
- Medical emergencies: acute coronary syndromes in relatively young patients, diabetic emergencies, stroke and sepsis
- Paediatric emergencies in family-oriented populations
Subspecialty interests include paediatric emergency medicine, pre-hospital and retrieval medicine, toxicology, emergency ultrasound, disaster medicine and mass gathering medicine, which is relevant given the many large events hosted in the region. Emergency physicians work in government and private hospitals, trauma centres and urgent care facilities.
Training routes worldwide
Emergency medicine is a relatively young specialty, and its structure differs considerably between countries:
- Germany: the Zusatzweiterbildung Klinische Akut- und Notfallmedizin builds on an existing Facharzt, often in internal medicine, surgery or anaesthesiology; the Zusatzbezeichnung Notfallmedizin relates mainly to pre-hospital emergency care
- United Kingdom and Ireland: structured training in emergency medicine leading to FRCEM and a CCT
- United States and Canada: emergency medicine residency followed by ABEM examination or FRCPC
- Australia and New Zealand: FACEM through the college's training programme
- Arab and Saudi Boards: residency programmes in emergency medicine in the region
- India: MD or DNB in Emergency Medicine
Because emergency medicine is not a standalone Facharzt in Germany, German applicants need a careful assessment of how their base specialty and additional qualification are classified in the Gulf.
Recognition as Specialist or Consultant
DHA, DOH and MOHAP license emergency physicians as Specialist or Consultant in emergency medicine. The classification depends on whether your qualification is recognised as a full emergency medicine specialty and on your experience after completing it. Consultant status generally requires a higher-level qualification and significantly more post-specialist experience, often including departmental leadership.
Typical steps include:
- Primary Source Verification of your degree, specialist certificates, licences and employment letters
- Equivalence assessment: qualifications such as FRCEM, ABEM, FACEM or an Arab Board are mapped against the authority's framework; for a German Facharzt with an additional qualification in emergency medicine, the outcome depends on the base specialty and documented emergency department experience
- Exam, interview or exemption, depending on qualification
Life support courses such as ACLS, ATLS and PALS are frequently requested by employers. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait use comparable categories. Because rules change, MediFlow reviews each case individually.
Career outlook
Gulf countries continue to expand their emergency care capacity. Growing populations, a large working-age expatriate community, high traffic volumes and frequent large-scale events create a constant need for emergency services. Hospitals are also building dedicated paediatric emergency departments and trauma systems.
Emergency physicians find roles in government and private hospitals, trauma centres, urgent care clinics and ambulance or retrieval services. With experience, positions in department leadership, education and disaster preparedness become accessible.
Internationally, qualifications such as FRCEM, ABEM or FACEM are widely known, and experience in high-volume Gulf departments is valued in many health systems.
Exams and preparation
Depending on your background, these assessments may apply:
- DHA specialist exam in emergency medicine for applicants who are not exempt
- DOH and MOHAP assessments, including interviews depending on qualification
- SCFHS classification in Saudi Arabia
- International: FRCEM, ABEM, FACEM, Arab or Saudi Board in emergency medicine, and in Germany the exam for the additional qualification
Exams usually cover resuscitation and airway management, trauma, cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies, toxicology, environmental emergencies, paediatric and obstetric emergencies, neurological emergencies, emergency ultrasound and procedural sedation. Heat-related illness and envenomation are especially relevant in the region.
MediFlow Exam Prep offers an emergency medicine question bank with case-based scenarios, explanations that walk through the decision-making and mock exams in exam format, so you can train speed and accuracy together.

Frequently asked questions
I am a German internist with the Zusatzweiterbildung Klinische Akut- und Notfallmedizin. Can I be licensed in emergency medicine?
Possibly. Because emergency medicine is an additional qualification in Germany rather than a standalone Facharzt, authorities assess your base specialty together with your emergency department experience. Some applicants are classified in emergency medicine, others in their base specialty. The outcome depends on the authority and your documentation. We review your certificates and work history to identify the most realistic route.
Can I work as a Consultant in emergency medicine with FRCEM?
FRCEM combined with completed UK training is generally regarded as a specialist qualification. Consultant classification usually also requires substantial post-specialist experience, often in a senior or consultant role. Each authority applies its own criteria. We assess your experience and documents to estimate whether a Specialist or Consultant application is appropriate.
Do I need ACLS, ATLS or PALS to work in a Gulf emergency department?
Many employers expect valid life support courses, and some require them as a condition of employment or privileges. Requirements differ between facilities. It makes sense to keep your courses current before moving, because renewing them after arrival can take time. These courses do not replace the specialist licence, but they are often part of the onboarding process.
Which topics are particularly important for the emergency medicine exam?
Resuscitation, airway management, trauma, acute coronary syndromes, sepsis, stroke and toxicology are core areas. Paediatric emergencies and obstetric emergencies are also frequently tested. In the Gulf context, heat-related illness and envenomation deserve extra attention. MediFlow Exam Prep covers these topics with case-based questions, explanations and mock exams in exam format.
Can I work in urgent care instead of a hospital emergency department?
Yes. Urgent care centres employ both emergency physicians and general practitioners, depending on the facility's licence and scope. If you hold an emergency medicine specialist licence, urgent care can be one option among several. The employer decides the exact role. We help you choose a licence route that fits the setting you are aiming for.
